Glossary
This page lists some words and abbreviations I commonly use that you may or may not be familiar with, depending on your experiences and interactions with people in the IB Programme. Abbreviations are listed first, with whatever they stand for following the abbreviated form. I intend to add more content as time goes on.
CAS (Creative, Action, and Service) jargon. A requirement to obtain your IB Diploma that forces you to experience things and volunteer for organizations you never, prior to being an IB Student, would have thought of volunteering for. The idea is that being in the band, playing sports, working for a homeless shelter, all the while balancing excessive amounts of workloads will make you more prepared for university life and thereby a more viable candidate for good universities.
OPLV (Origin, Purpose, Limitations, Values) jargon. The process by which IB Students evaluate whatever they read, watch, look, and listen to at school (and very possibly outside of school). IB Diploma candidates who have also been in the preparatory IB Programme report using this method of evaluating bias in various mediums in situations outside of school almost automatically.
Extended Essay torture. Basically what the title implies, the Extended Essay is the bane of every IB Student’s existence. It is essentially a really long essay on whatever (school-appropriate) topic of the IB Student’s choosing. The essay topic must preferably be an academic-catching, professional-sounding, and intelligent-sounding topic. (Examples will be included here). It is important to mention that this really long essay is usually completed within 1 day prior to the due date of the Extended Essay.
Internal Assessment torture. The author at this point is too traumatized to discuss this term.
